Front Porch Appeal: February a Month for Kindness & Connection
February 03, 2025

Welcome to Front Porch Appeal!

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed with warmth, connection, and moments that remind us to slow down and appreciate the people around us. Whether it’s a heartfelt note on Valentine’s Day, a cozy evening with friends, or the simple joy of seeing the first hints of spring on the horizon, this month is all about finding beauty in small gestures and shared moments.

In this edition, we’re celebrating kindness, community, and the little things that make February special. From creative ways to spread love and caring to seasonal inspirations for your home and neighborhood, we hope this newsletter brings a bit of warmth to your day.

We also share an inspiring story about Martin Luther King's Dream. This podcast has over 100,000 + listens.

And did you know that I (Mary) have a new, creative youtube channel?

And we are super proud to share our wonderful sponsors with you. Each of them is a family-owned company with products that we are so pleased to share with you.

So grab a cup of tea, settle in, and let’s welcome the month ahead together!

We’re incredibly grateful for you, and let's cheer each other on as we step into February. May you be feel cozy and loved.

February Brings Red to the Porch

Heart wall art we made for our porch

We are especially fond of this wall art we made a few years ago. Dave designed the heart cut-outs in his woodworking shop and I lined them with red felt.

Valentine basket on the front door

This basket started out plain white, but with a little creativity and a coat of vibrant red spray paint, it became the perfect accent for our Valentine’s porch.

To add a cozy touch, we nestled a red and white striped tea towel inside, letting its folds spill over the edges. Then we wove in a delicate pink floral vine, for a whimsical, seasonal display.

Do you like it? We love that the basket could be re-painted in other seasonal colors.

Ways to Spread Love and Kindness

Since February is truly a loving month, here are a few ways we can spread kindness...

- Porch Surprises - Leave a small treat or note on your neighbor’s porch to brighten their day. A handmade valentine would be adorable.

- Host a Galentine party or a soup dinner with your neighbors or family. Or even simpler, host a simple gathering with warm drinks.

- Make a pretty Valentine wreath with a friend or neighbor - one for each of your porches. You can get heart-shaped grapevine wreaths at your local craft store. Then decorate simply with a garland of flowers.

- We have some wonderful Valentine ideas for your porch right here and here.

A Wonderful Podcast for February

From Tracing the Path Podcast - 187 Years Behind Martin Luther King's Dream

Do you know where the words in the "I have a dream" speech come from?

Our son Dan has an awesome podcast that will tell you the story.

W.E.B. Dubois, Abraham Lincoln, A. Philip Randolph, Langston Hughes, Mahalia Jackson, Thomas Dorsey, Harry Belafonte, Prathia Hall Wynn, John D. Rockefeller, and so many others have been fighting for the Dream since 1776.

When Martin Luther King gave his speech in Washington, he made sure their voices were heard.

We are happy to share Dan's Tracing the Path podcast with you!

Look at these beautiful French screen doors - and no center post. Aren't they so lovely on this welcoming porch?

We've been proud to share PCA Products with you for many years and this is one of our favorite products.

Beautiful handrails from Vintage Woodworks

Aren't these handrails from Vintage Woodworks so attractive? With a solid hardwood core, these handrails are not only resistant to bending, but also easily maintained due to the PVC outer coating.

We are very proud of our long time sponsor, Vintage Woodworks, a leader in handcrafted house trim since 1978. They can assist you in choosing just the right design options for your porch and home.

Can you imagine taking a nap on this wonderful cottage pine bed swing bed from The Porch Store? And our favorite part is that the swing is adjustable. You can position the back one way for sitting and another way for napping. The best of both worlds, we believe.

We welcome you to take a look at all of The Porch Store products on their website.

They have long been sponsors to us and we could not be more proud.

Till Next Time...

Our Valentine to you!

We know you're busy and we appreciate you being a part of our porch family here.

May you enjoy the month of February with all the coziness and calm. And till spring, let us dream of spending time on our porches.

See you on the porch.

Our best always,

Mary and Dave
