January weather is starting off boldly!
Depending on where you live, your porch may be covered in sparkling snow - or basking in warm sunshine.
Because of our mild climate in Middle Tennessee, we decorate year round.
In winter, we enjoy creating a cozy setting using our small, electric fireplace, two rocking chairs, and colorful cushions.

Mary and I like to add wall art to set the scene as your see above.
She either paints on a piece of masonite or we create an artistic piece using wood slats like pictured.
We attach her artwork to our house siding with vinyl siding hooks.
The fireplace chase is made from a plywood frame covered with faux stone wallpaper.
Doesn't it look real? Even up close, it's rather hard to tell.
Here is another variation of our winter porch with a snowflake theme.
Do you see the lamp on the electric stove?
It provides a nice warm light in the evenings, adding to the overall ambiance.

If your porch receives abundant snow, perhaps a colorful piece of art will provide a nice contrast against the white and add a nice appeal to your home.
Check out our other ideas for your winter porch decorating.
When a true front porch is not feasible due to setback requirements, structural issues, finances, or other reasons,
building a porch extension onto your existing porch can easily provide additional outdoor living space.
Or alternatively, construct a patio area adjacent to your existing porch for extra seating area and outdoor enjoyment.
As shown in the photo below, an elevated patio area was constructed adjacent to the small front porch to add seating space.

With proper planning, you can add either a pergola or porch roof over the patio or extension area, if you wish.
The pergola above the patio extension below is perfect for hanging a porch swing.

January is the perfect time to start imagining how a porch extension could enhance your outdoor space.
Wouldn't it be nice to have an extra space for relaxing, conversation with friends, or perhaps just to enjoy a morning cup of coffee!
No matter the size of your porch, an extension can add functional outdoor living space;
use this link to find more ideas for porch extensions.
We share ideas about extending your small porch or portico and covers topics to consider like your porch landscaping,
materials, whether to cover your porch extension or not, joining it to your home or making it standalone,
and access to the extension.

In Mary's children's book, "Molly Jo Daisy: Being The New Kid", Molly Jo discovers a hidden book that contains advice for creating a most remarkable life.
As we begin 2022 we think this excerpt from her book is quite fitting:
Worth pondering...
When you look in the mirror, maybe all you see is the person you think you are.
But what would it be like if you looked deep inside and found a toolbox with most everything you ever needed?
A mind to figure things out, courage when you need it, strength to do the right thing.
Everything you need, you already have, right inside of you.
If you haven't recognized that lately, it is time to awaken the gifts you already have.
Mary's 240-page chapter book includes many more ideas for having a remarkable life - woven throughout her story.
