Front Porch Appeal - Start Spring On Your Porch!
Issue #65 March 2015
March has arrived and the official beginning of spring is only a few days away.
It's been a long winter for some and we are confident most folks are looking forward to warmer weather and time to spend outdoors.
March is the perfect month to start planning some outdoor activities, whether determining what to plant in the garden,
where to go on spring break or summer vacations, and for porch lovers, how to spend more time enjoying your porch.
Mary and I want to pass along some neat ideas we've discovered to enhance the look and comfort of your porch this spring.

Just stepped outside on the porch thinking it was going to be cold and was pleasantly surprised.
If you don't have warm weather just yet, it isn't far behind.

Along with spring decorating ideas, you'll find information about screen porch kit options, how to cut stringers for
porch steps, listen to interviews with our porch experts, and even receive our complementary eBook to download.
We also have a unique gift idea that would make a wonderful surprise for someone, including yourself.
Spring Porch Decorating Ideas
Time to start thinking of spring decorating ideas for your porch.
Adding some color after a long winter adds appeal to your home and "lightens the heart" too.
Sandy's planter filled with pansies and bunnies adds a festive spring burst of color on her front porch.
You can easily bring spring colors onto your porch with flowers or pillows (and a hat) like Dawn has done below.

Screen Porch Kit Options
A screen porch kit may be just the outdoor room you've been looking for.
They are designed for the do-it-your-selfer, come in a variety of design options, and can be used on your porch, deck, or patio.
We used a three-sided screen porch kit on a previous home and enjoyed family time on our screened porch and the additional space it provided.
Choose a walls-only screen kit to enclose a portion or all of your front porch, back porch, or covered deck.
Screen panels fit between your porch columns to enclose your space for bug-free dining and outdoor enjoyment.
A seasonal three-sided screen kit is perfect for decks and patio whereas choosing a hard-top screen porch kit can be used almost year round in many locations.

Selling Your Home or Know Someone Who Is?
Mary and I created a complementary eBook you can download showing how you can stage your front porch to help sell your home.
Much is written about staging the interior but little information is available about ideas you can use for the "first room" a potential buyer sees -
your front porch or stoop.
Our eBook contains over 40 pages of photos and ideas you can use to stage your porch to make the best first impression possible.
Even you aren't selling your home, you can use these same ideas to give your porch extra curb appeal.
Download the free eBook and/or send the link to someone you know who may be selling their home.

Porch Building Technique - Cutting Stringers for Porch Steps
I made a small set of porch steps the other day and had to cut stringers.
I could have purchased what I needed pre-cut at a local home supply store for about $18 and modified them for what I needed.
Instead, I had a board from which to cut the stringers and since I like the smell of sawdust in the morning I cut my own.
Some people are intimidated by the calculations and subsequent layout; however, it really is easy to do.
Like many things it takes longer to explain than to do but once you get the basics you'll be cutting stringers for your friends too.
Watch a video that clearly explains the entire process.

Gift Idea: A House Portrait
We have a fantastic gift suggestion - perhaps for your spouse or even yourself: a custom painting of your home or of your childhood home.
We found a wonderful artist who will draw your home from photographs and then she paints it with watercolors creating a special piece of artwork.
