Is Summer Winding Down?

Issue #94 August 2018

sunflowers in full bloom
Who loves sunflowers?
Dave and I tried our hand at growing sunflowers this summer. We sure wish that ours were this pretty.

Do you have beautiful golden sunflowers growing in your garden?

Here where we live, our grandchildren have been in school for two weeks already. Yes, two weeks and it's only the middle of August.

So from that perspective, summer is winding down here in Middle Tennessee. We still have plenty of warm days left though. Things are different than when we went to school - where the school year started after Labor Day.

How about for you? Is summer vacation still in full swing where you live? Our grandchildren who live in Virginia are still enjoying their summer break.

What a Difference a Porch Makes

If you ever wondered what a difference a porch makes to a home, take a moment to see these before and after photos of Billie's home and then of Sandy's home. Both of them were kind enough to share their photos with us.

Please take a look to see how a porch sky rocketed their home's warmth and welcoming feel.

Billie's Porch Addition on Her Ranch Home

Billie shares this picture of her ranch home before her front porch was built.
Before the porch addition
Billie's long ranch home was plain and simple before the porch was added. They took a good long while to come up with their porch design.

With only a stoop and minimal landscaping, her home was missing some curb appeal.

After the porch addition
What a difference a porch makes to Billie's home. Such a delicious update to her home. A welcoming craftsman style porch and gorgeous landscaping give her home an irresistible quality.

While not extravagant or over the top, Billie's porch makes an enviable difference to her home.

Sandy's Cape Cod Home Gets a Beautiful Porch

After the porch addition

The adorable landscaping done after the porch addition
This updated fresh landscaping is much more light and lovely than the heavy dense shrubbery she had earlier.

Sandy loves her home so much more with her front porch. And such personality her home gained with this curb appealing front porch too.

Who can doubt the difference a porch makes!

Handrails for Your Porch?

Front Porch Hand Rails - what you should know
Porch hand rails are for all ages!
Handrails on porch steps are just plain reassuring. They lend support for anyone going up or down the stairs.

Whether you need help with balance, are carrying packages or a baby in your arms, or for any reason you need a little help navigating the steps - porch handrails are good to have. Just the other day, someone thanked us for the handrails we have - and we only have two steps.

Even if you have a handrail on just one side of your porch, it's a big help for anyone going up or down your steps.

When you're tired of plastic pitchers that lose their luster over time, here's an attractive glass pitcher (with stainless steel lid) that is durable to stand the test of time.

We like that you can fill this pitcher with boiling water to steep your tea OR fill it with freshly sliced lemons, plenty of chunky ice and water.

We would be proud to use it on our porch. When we see something a little bit special and unique, we like to share with you.

If you like this pitcher, you can learn more about it on Amazon (Amazon affiliate link. If you purchase through our link, we will receive a small commission at no cost to you.

Who is Looking Forward to Autumn?

Stamped leaves make nice pillow toppers
It's not a secret that we love cooler weather at our house. So the thought of crisp cool air, crunchy colorful leaves, and a time to break out sweaters, build campfires and take hikes - is very welcome. We love the peacefulness of autumn days, the gratitude for nature's wild colors and the joy of hiking, fishing or camping in the long-awaited refreshing temperatures.

With those good thoughts, it's nice to think how we will decorate our porch for the season. Do you do that as well? Conjure up little ideas in your head? We do.

A close-up of last year's autumn pillow project
The picture above is what we did for our autumn porch - and honestly it was one of the most fun times we had decorating. We collected autumn leaves, painted the back side of them (where the leaf veins are) and then rolled them onto the fabric for our pillow covers.

So easy. Read more about our autumn leaf project here.
