Hard to believe it's already October. We love this time of year, a bit more chill in the air, rich golden hues, flavorful comfort soups, pumpkins of all colors and shapes, and a few snazzy Halloween decorations make the season so pleasant.

Our autumn porch is simple but vibrant

A look at our fall entryway
Pumpkins and fall leaves dress up our entryway
I cut out a wooden pumpkin for Mary from a part of a cedar fence slat (truly inexpensive) and she painted it with various shades of oranges and golds for our front door. A bit of cream-colored yarn brings it all together at the stem. Against the blue door, this pumpkin looks dazzling.

Also at our entryway is a simple board that Mary covered with black and white checked fabric. Then she cut leaves from felt and we simply stapled them on.

A look at our fall wall art
Who loves fall wall art?
Mary covered a board with a velour-type fabric that she already had. It's a shade of blue. Then she cut out pumpkins from colorful felt and glued them on. She used a permanent marker to add a few details. Then she added some cream-colored yarn for an accent on the pumpkin stem.

See the wire going across at the bottom? That helps keep it from swaying back and forth from the wind.

At the far end of our autumn porch
Mary made the pumpkin wall art by gluing scraps of leftover felt onto another wooden pumpkin cut-out I made for her. It looks kind of like a crazy quilt - but it works.

Our porch swing holds memories of grandchildren enjoying carefree times. It's the perfect place to enjoy a few mindless, relaxing moments, hearing the rustle of the leaves and the chirping of the bluebirds.

Fall Projects for You

Fall is the perfect time to make some DIY projects. Whether decorating for autumn or Halloween, we have several projects you might enjoy doing.

We made this Halloween candy holder and black cat using inexpensive fence slats and plywood. It's a fun project for kids and grandkids too. All you need is a few simple tools and you can build it in an afternoon. We've included the template for the cat to make it even easier.

My Uncle Ralph and his wife Mary Frances appreciate our handrails
Our uncle and his wife recently spent a few days with us. He is almost 93 and going strong.

We were really glad we had installed step railings on our porch. Although we only had a few steps, the railing not only made it safer for them but also made it a lot easier to negotiate the steps.

We highly recommend you consider these DIY porch step railings for your home or perhaps your parents or grandparents. They are easy to install and help prevent costly falls.
