A November to Be Grateful
Issue #71 November 2015
November - the month to honor our veterans, celebrate Thanksgiving, and perhaps start planning for December's events - all of which can be done on the porch of course.
Busy times are ahead and Mary and I hope you find a few minutes to enjoy your porch,
whether decorating it for the holidays or better yet, spending a few minutes on the porch swing.

We also like to take time to honor all of our veterans for whom we are forever grateful.
Veteran's Day is Wednesday November 11th.
Whether active duty or retired, your service to our country is much appreciated.
To that end, we have a special card you can download and send or give to someone you know who has served their country proudly.

Our Thanksgiving Story
When we were stationed in Alaska with the Air Force, we, along with almost everyone we knew, did not have any extended family visiting due to distance and cost.
But that didn't stop us from creating our own Thanksgiving memories.
We would reserve a cabin near an ice-covered lake and invite any and all to share Thanksgiving together.
Families made turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, etc., at home and transported them to the cabin along with augers to drill holes in the
ice for ice fishing, sleds for sledding, skates for skating, and cross country skis for skiing.
We still aren't sure how we kept everything hot considering the cabin only had a closet-sized kitchen,
nor how we got everyone around one long table to eat, but we do remember the fun and camaraderie.
We've long since left Alaska but that tradition has carried on. Over the past number of years, our family
has met cabins on Thanksgiving where we enjoy our love for each other and great food of course.
