Mobile Home Porch Privacy IdeasLiving in a mobile home community has pros and cons. One of the cons is often how much outdoor space you control. Most tenants in a mobile home community have small yards and often regulations against building privacy fences. The Power of LatticeLattice is great because it is inexpensive, lightweight and easy to cut, install and paint. Though it seems silly, one of the other beautiful things about lattice is it traditionally comes in 4 foot sections which means you don't need a pick-up or minivan to get it.And don't forget to look on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for people looking to get rid of lattice cheaply or for free. Sometimes there is no reason to pay for materials like lattice, when you could instead use the money for paint or other decor items. As you can see in this image, a piece of lattice can be cut and framed with a trim piece to sit on the railing of a porch. Sometimes all you need is an extra foot or two, and other times you might extend the lattice up to the roof or awning frame: ![]() The same thing can happen off the porch, perhaps in a landscaped area. In this case a frame was made with 2x4s with the full sheet of lattice affixed within: ![]() Fabric PrivacyAnother material that is not always expensive is fabric. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely expensive fabrics. But using fabric as a privacy tool doesn't necessarily mean you need the finest stuff. Curtains could work great. While this picture looks excuisite, it's not hard to do practically. If you already have a covered porch, installing a curtain rod between the supports shouldn't be too difficult. However, most will probably have porch supports wider than a typical shower. In that case, try to acquire a dowel rod at a local hardware store (like Lowes) or search for people getting rid of old barn supplies or holding estate sales. You also might be able to find something you can use at a Habitat for Humanity store. Then add a curtain and tie it back when you don't need privacy. If you need more porch decorating ideas, we have some here. ![]() Use Plants (Dead or Alive) for PrivacyFinally, plants can come to your rescue. If you're lucky there is someone in your community posting on Facebook that they have bamboo in their yard and need to get rid of it. If so, go over with a simple saw and cut as many pieces down as inches you want to cover. Look at this image as an example: ![]() Look at the "bamboo wall" they constructed. There are 15 deckboards visible on that porch. If they are around 4" wide each, that would be 60" of porch depth. So you would need to cut down 60 bamboo poles. Of course if the poles are 8' tall and you only need a 4' fence, then you'd only need 30. Strip them of leaves, lay them down on the ground and build a little frame around them. Then stand it up. Another idea is hanging plants. We did not have access to a good mobile home picture for this, so we attempted to have ChatGPT create one for us. This humorous monstrosity is what they came up with. :) ![]() While the idea of hanging 12 beautiful, mature and healthy ferns is fun, they take up a lot of space because of how far their fronds stick out. It might be smarter to hang a variety of herbs, like chives and basil, and flowers. If you can hang several together you'll have yourself quite a mobile home porch privacy fence. |
