Retractable Screens for Your Porch, Patio and Beyond

We like retractable screens not only because they disappear when not needed, but they keep out annoying insects. We also appreciate that they help block the sun, which means more pleasant outdoor time. And all can be done at the touch of a button.

Extremely versatile, you can use them on porches, patios, archways, gazebos, decks, garages, large glass walls, doorways, and balconies to list a few. Some retractable screens can fit openings up to 25 feet wide and 16 feet tall with either flush or recessed mounting while other motorized screens can fit up to 40 feet wide.

Why Retractable Screens

Mary and I really like the idea of being able to raise and lower screens to suit our outdoor needs, unlike traditional screen panels. A significant advantage is being able to control the amount of protection, whether you choose manual or motorized retractable screens.

When conditions are right, raise the screens out-of-sight to create a totally open air space. You can offer an area to a large group of people or just enjoy the "wild open outdoors" with your morning coffee.

Lower them to whatever height needed to enjoy an evening with friends and family for dinner outdoors without mosquitoes or flies buzzing about.

Retractable screens also have an added benefit. When it's warm outside, your porch can be cooler. When it's chilly, your enclosed space can be warmer. We appreciate energy efficiency. In some geographical areas, retractable screen enclosures can serve as a three-season room.

Retractable screens are sure to boost the look and functionality of your home.

Imagine the Possibilities

Do you have a porch, deck, or patio with a view and wish to comfortably spend time in the outdoors? To do so, you will want protection from the elements without sacrificing your view.

Relax and enjoy the view
You can use retractable screens to create a pleasant outdoor space for you and your family. Unlike traditional stationary screen panels, you will have more flexibility with motorized retractable screens.

The screens provide a seamless enclosure creating an oasis free of weather and insects. You are now free to enjoy dining, relaxing, or entertaining rain or shine.

Tips for Selecting Your Retractable Screens

Retractable screens are ideal for outdoor kitchens
Consider retractable screen systems as an investment in your home because they will last for many years. Do your due diligence to select screens that are aesthetically pleasing and durable to protect your investment.

We've already discussed how you can raise or lower these screens based on your needs, how they keep insects at bay and create an inviting outdoor space. Also, consider these factors when selecting your screens.

What Size Will You Need?

Retractable screens are designed to fit standard width openings. Did you know, however, that they can be customized to fit almost any opening size?

For example, Phantom Screens are available in sizes from 26-480 inches wide to up to 192 inches tall. This flexibility in width and height should cover most situations.

How About Automation?

A convenient feature to consider is remote control with easy integration into your home automation systems. Whether using a wall-mounted, hand-held, or a smartphone app, you can't go wrong by including this feature in your motorized retractable screen system. The convenience is well worth it.

Sun and Wind Sensors Are Most Helpful

We believe this is a must - automated sun and wind sensors. Protect your investment by including this feature if feasible.

Things happen, especially when you aren't home or able to react quickly. A wind sensor will automatically raise your screens based on wind velocity to ensure they remain intact. An automated sun sensor is ideal for helping to regulate indoor temperatures.

Screen Options for Environmental Control, Comfort, and Appeal

Perhaps the most crucial consideration is what type of screen, vinyl, or fabric best suits your needs. You have many choices, from insect-proof mesh to vinyl and fabrics in many colors.

You Have Choices: Mesh, Vinyl, and Fabric Options

Screen mesh density determines the screen's functionality. Screens can not only protect you from the weather but also from the sun's UV rays, control ventilation, and add privacy. For example, a solar mesh can reduce heat and glare by up to 75% and help keep carpets, curtains, and furniture from fading.

Choose the right mesh to meet your needs
Not all mesh is the same, whether it be size, quality, or color. That is why it is vital to investigate the various types and select one that will meet your requirements.

For example, insect mesh is designed to keep pesky insects out. Some can keep out noseeums and other very tiny insects. For that reason, insect mesh tends to be darker; however, keep an eye out for meshes that maximize available light and ventilation.

Privacy mesh can block others from seeing in or block an unsightly view. Privacy mesh comes in various screen colors and densities, depending on the amount of privacy you desire.

For climate control, choose vinyl panels; they let in light but won't inhibit the view.

All-Important Color Choices Too

Frames and mesh screens colors come in a range of colors to complement your surrounding framing and decor. This adds to the attractiveness of your home and appears as seamless construction.

We've also discovered that you can have a custom color matched to your sample, which can add a new dimension to outdoor decorating.

Here's a small sample of colors from which to choose.
